MRI vs. CAT scans

A CAT scan stands for Computer Axial Tomography and is commonly known as CT (Computed Tomography) scan. A CT scan generates a three dimensional image of an organ or different parts of the internal body. This scanning method is usually used for the diagnosis of many cancers such as lung, liver, pancreas, and more. Los angeles MRI center and northridge ultrasound clinic are always ready to serve you better.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is based on the most advanced technology and better suited for different types of diagnoses. You can go to any Los Angeles ultrasound center for any type of diagnostic imaging.
• A CAT scan works on the diagnostic technique of X-ray imaging, but to a new level. An MRI uses magnet and radio waves to create images of different parts of the body.
• A CT scan does not show ligaments and tendons at all. It provides clear images of bones and vertebrates. Therefore, physicians recommend CT scan to patients with an organ injury and bone fractures. An MRI is good at taking images of all body organs, muscles, and spinal cord.
• A CAT scan does not restrict the movement of the body during the process while MRI is sensitive to patient’s movement.
• A CT scan can easily be done without the removal of other medical devices. But, it is impossible to do MRI in the presence of any other medical device.
• An MRI is a bit expensive than a CT scan.
• A CT scan is used in emergency situation as it takes less than 5 minutes to perform the whole procedure. While, an MRI is the process of 30 minutes.

Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Banding

The surgical treatment of obesity involves the performance of three types of surgery. These include restrictive procedures which limit the amount of food entering the intestines, thereby resulting in smaller calorie consumption. The second type of surgery is malabsorptive in which the food entering the body bypasses the upper part of intestines, resulting in its absorption through a lesser area of absorption. The third variety of surgery is a combination of the above two procedures. Gastric sleeve and gastric banding are purely restrictive types of surgery for the treatment of obesity. So, how do you decide which surgery to choose? Let us review these procedures and understand their pros and cons.
Procedure
In gastric sleeve surgery, a sleeve of stomach along its greater curvature is removed, thereby converting stomach into a narrow tube of 100 ml capacity. In gastric banding, adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper stomach just below the gastro-esophageal junction through laparoscopic surgery. The band is connected with an inflatable ring on the inner surface which is filled with saline so as to restrict the entry of food.
Mechanism
Though both are restrictive, the additional benefit of gastric sleeve surgery is that the upper part of stomach called fundus is removed which is responsible for the production of hunger hormone ‘Ghrelin’. This results in a reduction of appetite.
Reversibility
Gastric sleeve surgery is not reversible because a part of stomach is removed and cannot be replaced. On the other hand, gastric banding is adjustable and reversible. One can adjust the calibre of band by injecting or removing saline and regulate the passage of food. This is not possible in gastric sleeve surgery as the calibre of gastric tube is not adjustable. The silicone band can also be removed through a small surgery and stomach regains its earlier shape and function. This may be required in case of certain complications. This procedure may then be converted to any other type of bariatric surgery.
Medical implant
Gastric sleeve does not require placement of any implant in the body whereas gastric banding results in the placement of an implant.
Complications
The gastric band associated complications include band slippage, erosion into the stomach and obstruction. Specific complications of gastric sleeve include leakage of staple line and bleeding.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Mexico

Gastric sleeve surgery or ‘sleeve gastrectomy’ is the most popular and commonly performed surgery for the treatment of obesity in Mexico. It has been found to be extremely effective in weight reduction in patients with severe or morbid obesity. It is also preferred by surgeons as it is easier to learn and perform this surgery. Gastric sleeve surgery is performed by trained bariatric surgeons. The bariatric surgery team also includes intensive care specialists, psychologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, nutritionists and rehabilitation specialists. A complete assessment is done by these specialists before surgery so as to ensure optimal status of the patient for gastric sleeve surgery.

Procedure
The gastric sleeve surgery is performed by laparoscopic approach under general anesthesia. The duration of this surgery is about an hour. A sleeve of stomach along the greater curvature is excised. This converts the stomach into a tube of about 100 ml volume. It is a restrictive procedure as it restricts the amount of food entering the stomach. This achieves a reduction in consumption of calories and ensures weight loss. The gastric sleeve surgery also alters the physiology by removing the topmost part of stomach called fundus. The fundus is the source of ‘hunger hormone’ called Gremlin. A drop in this hormone reduces appetite, further adding to the benefits of gastric sleeve surgery. After surgery, the patient is discharged on third to fifth day, depending on post-operative recovery.
Post-operative management
The patient is kept on fluid diet for two weeks. Thereafter pureed food is recommended for 4-6 weeks depending on the recovery. Since the stomach loses the churning capacity, it is advised to chew the food properly. One should consume small quantity at each meal which should last for 15 – 20 minutes. They are also advised not to consume water along with food as it distends the small stomach and results in pain, nausea and vomiting. Water should be taken between meals to avoid dehydration. Proteins should form the base of bariatric diet. Carbohydrates and fats should be limited. An adequate and regular supplementation of vitamins, iron and calcium is beneficial.
Advantages of Gastric sleeve
The quality of life improves due to excess body weight loss of about 60% three years after gastric sleeve surgery. There is also an improvement of associated diseases like diabetes, hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
